Hours: Full-time, 9am–5pm, Monday through Friday, in office.
The Controller reports to the CFO and supports UNC NEPA’s financial operations by overseeing day-to-day accounting, ensuring financial accuracy, maintaining internal controls, and ensuring compliance with regulations and policies. This role serves as a bridge between the CFO and accounting staff, managing key functions such as month-end close, financial reporting, budgeting, and audit preparation.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, a strong leader, and skilled in improving financial processes within a nonprofit environment.
Lead daily accounting operations: general ledger, A/P, A/R, payroll, bank reconciliations.
Manage month-end and year-end close.
Monitor cash flow; support short- and long-term forecasting.
Oversee capital expenditures and sub-ledger reconciliations.
Manage revenue recognition and fund classification (restricted, special, unrestricted).
Monitor departmental expenditures for compliance with budgets and funding guidelines.
Reconcile balance sheet and expense items.
Support budget creation and variance tracking.
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and year-end internal financial reports.
Generate project/department-level reports.
Manage IRS Form 990 and other filings.
Monitor daily cash flow and weekly cash needs.
Reconcile reserves and special accounts.
Prepare monthly target cash flow reports.
Lead annual audit coordination and serve as liaison with external auditors.
Prepare audit schedules and documentation; address findings and implement corrective actions.
Ensure timely filing of federal, state, and local tax documents (990s, 1099s, etc.).
Monitor grant terms for accurate fund allocation.
Track spending and ensure allowability.
Submit funder financial reports on schedule.
Design and implement internal controls to ensure financial accuracy and prevent fraud.
Maintain segregation of duties and proper authorization processes.
Review cash handling, payroll, procurement, and disbursement controls.
Ensure compliance with GAAP, IRS rules, and funder requirements.
Develop and update financial policies and train staff on adherence.
Identify financial and operational risks and propose mitigation strategies (e.g., reserves, insurance, revenue diversification).
Support restricted fund tracking and grant compliance.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
Strong knowledge of accounting principles, budgeting, and analysis.
Experience with fund accounting and grant management required.
Proficiency in accounting systems and Excel required.
Nonprofit experience and knowledge of compliance regulations preferred.
